Victorian Short Stay Levy

Written by Alex Raymond

The Victorian Short-Stay Levy is a state government tax that applies to short-term accommodation bookings in Victoria, which came into effect on 1 January 2025. The levy applies to bookings of less than 28 consecutive days at a property in Victoria.

A 7.5% levy is applied to the total booking fee — including cleaning fees and GST (where applicable). The Short Stay Levy applies to all short stay accomodation bookings across all platforms in Victoria.

Automatic Collection and Remittance

Riparide will collect and remit the Short Stay Levy on behalf of hosts on our platform in Victoria, unless an exemption has been requested.

If you want to check your listing, you can view your listing on our site – when selecting dates, you will be able to see the Short Stay Levy as a line item in the pricing breakdown.

In short: if you have active short-stay listings in Victoria and do nothing else, the levy is taken care of for you.

Exemptions

The levy will only not be collected if you have submitted a valid exemption form declaring that your property is not short-stay accommodation under the levy rules.

A property may qualify for exemption if it does not meet the criteria of short-stay accommodation set by the Victorian SRO (for example, if the property is not being used for short-stay rental or it meets an exemption category defined by the SRO).

If an exemption is applicable, you must submit the required documentation, otherwise Riparide will continue to collect the levy automatically.

If you believe your property is exempt and wish to submit an exemption, please follow these steps:

  1. Download and complete the exemption declaration form from the Victorian State Revenue Office here.

  2. Complete the form and save it in PDF format.

  3. Email the PDF to [email protected] with the subject:
“Victorian Short-Stay Levy Exemption – [Your Listing ID / Property Address]”

  4. Riparide will review your submission and take appropriate action with the SRO if eligible.
